Liam Matthews

Liam's journey began when his PhD research in food chemistry took him to coffee plantations in Colombia, where he discovered the intricate relationships between local customs and coffee production methods. The son of a British chemist father and Italian culinary historian mother, he grew up straddling two cultures in Florence, which instilled a deep curiosity about how traditions shape identity. Now based in Rio de Janeiro with his partner and young daughter, he balances his work as a research chemist with his passion for documenting the scientific foundations of cultural practices around the world.
